Researchers studied the impact of early childhood risk and protection and parents’ alcohol problems on underage drinking and substance use in a prospective study spanning infancy to adolescence in order to help develop early interventions to address the issue.

This prospective study examined developmental pathways to substance use among adolescents with alcoholic fathers and a matched control group. Participants were recruited and assessed at several time points in early and middle childhood. The study examined the role of risk and protective factors from early childhood in predicting to onset and progression of substance use in adolescence.
