Chandra R. Murphy, assistant to the dean of the Graduate School of Education, died April 16. She was 54. A UB staff member for 28 years, she profoundly impacted the institution and leaves an indelible mark on her colleagues.

Murphy began her career at UB in 1996 as administrative support in what was then the Division of Public Service and Urban Affairs. In 2001, she moved to the Graduate School of Education, where her skills and dedication came to the forefront as she served under three deans: Mary Gresham (2001-12), Jaekyung Lee (2013-17) and Suzanne Rosenblith (2017-present). Throughout her 23 years in GSE, Murphy was known for her professionalism, institutional knowledge, immeasurable kindness, compassion, quick wit and humor.

Her colleagues remember her as a pillar of strength, bringing a sense of calm to every situation. They say she infused the workplace with warmth every day. More than just a colleague, she was a mentor and friend to many, always ready to listen and provide guidance with her signature smile. Her legacy at UB is one of tireless devotion and significant contribution.

A service will be held at 4 p.m. May 4 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 481 Brighton Road, Tonawanda. Friends and colleagues can show additional support and honor Murphy’s memory by sending flowers to the service, planting a tree in her memory or leaving a message on her tribute wall.
