UBIT offers tips for keeping your personal information safe

Published October 14, 2019

Ninety-five percent of all cybersecurity incidents are due to human error, according to the cybersecurity company Duo Security, but a little knowledge can go a long way toward keeping yourself — and your personal information — safe.

October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and UBIT has some tips — and online resources — for staying secure.

  • Know the most common scams targeting UB employees. Impersonating a supervisor, offering fake job opportunities — scammers go to great lengths to steal your money and valuable personal information. Know how to spot the most common scams, and what to do if you’re a victim.
  • Use a strong, unique password, or passphrase. Every time. When you reuse passwords on multiple sites, a breach on one site could compromise your accounts elsewhere (and no, you can’t just add a ‘1’ at the end of the old password!). Learn more about what’s at stake, and how you can craft a secure password.

Contact the UBIT Help Center if you believe your UBITName account has been compromised. For phishing attempts, follow these steps to report it. If you believe your identity has been stolen, report the theft at the identitytheft.gov.
