Pianist Vonsattel to perform in All-Beethoven recital

Internationally acclaimed pianist Gilles Vonsattel will visit UB on March 6 for a powerful all-Beethoven recital.

The concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Lippes Concert Hall in Slee Hall, North Campus. Vonsattel will perform on the Department of Music’s Bösendorfer concert grand, crafted in Vienna and known for its extraordinary tonal depth.

Renowned for his intellectually probing interpretations and commanding stage presence, Vonsattel will present a program featuring four masterworks that span Beethoven’s emotional and stylistic range — from poetic introspection to unbridled dramatic intensity.

The program:

  • Piano Sonata in E-flat Major, Op. 27, No. 1
  • Piano Sonata in F Minor, Op. 57, “Appassionata”

Intermission

  • Piano Sonata in C-sharp Minor, Op. 27, No. 2, “Moonlight”
  • Piano Sonata in A Major, Op. 101

Described by The New York Times as “tightly conceived and passionately performed … a study in intensity,” Vonsattel is celebrated for his intellectual clarity, expressive range and compelling stage presence. His Beethoven interpretations promise both architectural insight and emotional immediacy, brought vividly to life on one of the world’s finest concert instruments.

Tickets are $20. Advance tickets can be purchased at Ticketmaster, at the Center for the Arts box office from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, and at the Slee Hall box office an hour before the concert. UB students are entitled to one complimentary ticket — to this and all UB music department concerts — and may pick up their ticket right before the concert.
