Certified Lean Professional One-on-One

Converting non-productive time into customer-focused, productive time enables any organization to grow revenue faster than cost. This course prepares participants to implement tools of the waste-minimizing Lean problem-solving methodology, resulting in lower costs, increased customer satisfaction, better on-time performance, and higher quality. Candidates will learn how to craft a data-driven business case built on root cause analysis to support process improvement recommendations.

Specific Lean concepts and tools covered include:

  • Five principles of Lean culture, emphasizing employee engagement
  • Eight forms of waste, and ways to measure them
  • Value-added and non-value-added activities
  • Flow and visual control
  • Root cause analysis and Pareto analysis
  • Change management and project leadership
  • Kaizen and value stream mapping
  • 5S and work place organization
  • Mistake proofing/error proofing/poke yoke
  • Standardized work
  • Set-up reduction/single minute exchange of dies (SMED)
  • Pull systems and Kanban signals

The program emphasizes how Lean concepts and tools work together, and why each is important. Candidates hear real examples of challenges faced during Lean implementation. They learn about the importance of using metrics to measure improvements.

The final session includes a complete program review and project progress report-out.

Certification requires passing a final exam and completing a successful Lean project at the candidate’s place of work or a qualified host company/organization (candidate must secure arrangements). Successful projects require access to relevant personnel and data.

All projects submissions and resubmissions must be received for final review within 12 months of onboarding. After 12 months an administrative fee will be assessed for any project submission.

Hours: 28 hours of online education and personal mentoring/coaching hours; mentoring is conducted via telephone, video conferencing or at TCIE

  • Identification of an improvement project before first class
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint

Online Education Instructor Bios:

Peter Baumgartner, CSSMBB

As UB TCIE’s Operational Excellence Director, Peter is a resident expert in the Lean Six Sigma methodology and tools who has delivered substantial, validated hard and soft savings across a variety of projects in finance, medical devices, insurance, food services, building materials, publishing, and other service-related industries, as well as manufacturing. He has nearly 10 years of experience with a global company in serving as the lead on a multitude of process improvement project teams that have delivered record performance in yields, cost reduction, quality and safety. With an M.S. in statistics, Peter has an advanced understanding and application of statistics, and develops the potential in others through helping them understand Six Sigma and Lean methodologies.

 

Sabrina Casucci, PhD

Dr. Casucci joined the faculty of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, University at Buffalo in 2016 as a teaching assistant professor, after receiving a PhD from the same department in 2014 and completing a one-year post-doctoral appointment shared between Industrial Engineering and the School of Nursing at the University at Buffalo. Dr. Casucci has expertise in quality systems, Six Sigma and Lean manufacturing methodologies, as well as modeling and evaluation of systems and workflows. Dr. Casucci also has more than 10 years of experience in the medical device and commercial plumbing manufacturing industries, focusing on products and process improvement using Six Sigma and Lean manufacturing principles. Dr. Casucci has also consulted with numerous companies in both the healthcare and manufacturing sectors with projects focused on facility layout, workflow design, and quality improvement initiatives.
