5S and Standardized Work (5SSW8)

Organizational concepts like 5S and standardized work are key to making the Lean methodology tick. But when these two waste-reducing tools are forced upon employees rather than implemented with their active involvement, Lean efforts have slim survival rates.

This course examines the appropriate way to engage employees in 5S (organizing the physical space) and standardized work (organizing how work is done), so they grasp how these tools can make their work lives easier while improving the company. Participants learn the theoretical foundation of successfully converting wasted time – due to searching for materials or information, or performing needless tasks – into productive time.

Topics include:

  • How 5S and standardized work aids employees and customers
  • The meaning of each “S” and how they work together
  • Do’s and don’ts of effective implementation
  • Removing the unnecessary from your space and processes
  • The importance of simplicity and safety
  • Sustain: the most important step
  • Linkage to other Lean tools

The course includes tips, interactive discussion and hands-on activity.
