Building upon UB’s reputation as a leader in advanced manufacturing and design, UB’s Sustainable Manufacturing and Advanced Robotic Technologies (SMART) community is helping create the next generation of technologies, processes and education.

The Vice President for Research and Economic Development advances the research enterprise at UB. Its many offices provide a supportive infrastructure for scholarship and creative activities, as well as advocating on behalf of researchers.

UB’s Business and Entrepreneur Partnership office is helping create a seamless and nurturing entrepreneurial ecosystem in Western New York through licensed technology, incubation facilities and programs, educational workshops and presentations, mentoring, seed grant funding when partnered with university faculty, and opportunities to meet with and pitch to investors.

The UB Technology Transfer (TT) office guides researchers as their discoveries and inventions become new products and services. TT also facilitates contracts related to business-university partnerships.

The New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences (CBLS) is a hub for life sciences innovation and technology-based economic development. It drives scientific discovery by facilitating collaboration among academia, industry and the public sector.

The New York State Center of Excellence in Materials Informatics (CMI) leverages UB’s cutting-edge materials science, big data analytics and advanced manufacturing expertise to drive critical R&D activities that directly impact private-sector growth.

UB Shared Facilities provides cost-effective access to precision laboratories, tools and equipment for electronic device development, the study and analysis of materials, motion simulation and 3D additive and digital manufacturing – all available for shared use by UB students and faculty, as well as researchers at other academic institutions, and those in government and industry.

Buffalo Manufacturing Works is a collaboration between leading industry, research and academic partners that provides access to a wide range of resources related to advanced manufacturing. It helps innovation-driven organizations excel by partnering with their internal manufacturing, engineering, and R&D teams to deliver better products, grow and compete.
