Projects

The Rudy Bruner Center for Urban Excellence (RBC) advances community-based research and design that addresses urban challenges through collaboration, creativity, and applied scholarship. The following are research projects that provide a snapshot of RBC’s growing portfolio of funded research. Each project demonstrates the Center’s mission to connect academic inquiry with civic action and contribute to the School of Architecture and Planning’s leadership in equitable and resilient urban development.

This multidisciplinary project, a partnership with UB Institute for Learning Sciences (UBILS), employs community-engaged protocols to explore how community learning and sense-making happen in the context of infrastructure reform.

Spearheaded by the Mayor’s Office of Strategic Planning, in partnership with Buffalo Place, the initiative aims to produce insights from data and observations from a diverse group of downtown stakeholders through a series of engagements and interviews.  

HOME & Sustainable Living (HOME)

The RBC and UB HOME & Sustainable Living Initiative are working on interdisciplinary research-to-practice and experiential learning focused on advancing the affordability and resilience of living environments through alternative housing.  

Climate Ready Corridors: Streetscape Designs for Extreme Heat

This interdisciplinary research project develops practical, scalable strategies and a statewide design toolkit to help New York communities redesign streetscapes to reduce extreme heat and strengthen neighborhood climate resilience.

Military Family Housing

This project explores innovative financing, technology, and development strategies for rapidly delivering high-quality, affordable new communities to support military families during large-scale strategic relocations.
