The Washington Post interviewed Nicholas Rajkovich in a story about the wildfires on Maui. The destruction is “pretty devastating,” said Rajkovich, who briefly lived on Maui in the mid-2000s. The article notes that the wildfires have ravaged numerous landmarks in the historic town of Lahaina, and preservationists are hoping to rebuild. Sometimes, buildings can be moved or raised in efforts to guard against extreme weather. But that often doesn’t work for buildings of cultural significance, which are tied to a specific location and derive their meaning from their context, Rajkovich said.
