The Washington Post quotes LaGarrett King in an article discussing how many Black parents are searching for alternative ways to teach their children about Black history after Florida’s ban on teaching African American history in classrooms. King notes it is a long-standing tradition for Black parents to look outside the public school system to churches, civic organizations and fraternal organizations to teach what won’t be taught in schools. “Black people have understood that school systems, particularly school systems led by White people, weren’t going to teach their history,” King said.
