Established by UB's first and long-serving Vice Provost for International Education (Professor Stephen Dunnett), this fund supports UB students in any field pursuing study abroad through a UB or SUNY program. Having created the Office of Study Abroad Programs some 30 years ago, Professor Dunnett sought to increase study abroad opportunities for UB students and his fund will continue that effort. Dr. Dunnett created this endowment with the belief that experiencing other cultures through study abroad not only enhances students' personal self-growth, but also prepares them to effectively participate and compete in an increasingly multicultural and global society. Through this gift, Dr. Dunnett seeks to reduce the financial barriers to immersive study abroad experiences, thereby allowing access to this transformational experience to a wider populations of UB students. Based on available funds, a limited number of partial scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to assist students with the costs of study abroad for an academic year, semester, summer, or winter program.

Established in 1993 by Dr. Barry A. Ruchlin and Dr. Frederic M. Hirsh, the scholarship is in memory of Steven M. Robbins.
Ira P. Gunn Nurse Endowment Fund

In addition to founding the program at UB, Ira P. Gunn was a premiere authority in the field of nurse anesthesia, and a prolific writer and educator. She served as consultant to the U.S. Army Surgeon General and the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, as well as the UB School of Nursing.

S. David Farr Scholarship Fund

Dr. Farr’s accomplishments include developing a computerized communication system for the Stein family and their son, Matthew. This fund, named in Dr. Farr’s honor, provides a scholarship for students pursuing a graduate program in the Graduate School of Education at the University at Buffalo. Preference is given to students who are studying or conducting research in a program that includes the interface of learning and technology.

Polish Studies Program—Jagiellonian University Fund

Created by a retired UB staff member from the local Polish community, this fund supports visiting scholars from UB's distinguished partner, the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. Institutional partners for three decades, UB and the Jagiellonian have collaborated in many ways involving faculty, students, scholars and librarians. The fund makes it possible for doctoral students and junior faculty from the Jagiellonian to spend up to two months doing research at UB and conferring with UB colleagues, mentors and students. These visits have led to the successful completion of many Jagiellonian dissertations and book projects.

Nina Tretiak-Shields Fund

Created with a bequest from a retired professor of Russian at UB, this fund supports students studying a foreign language and culture abroad. Nina Tretiak-Shields was born in 1914 in Ukraine and attended Kharkiv University during the totalitarian regime of Joseph Stalin. Despite threats to her life from Stalin’s forces, she stayed at the university to complete her doctorate. In 1940, Dr. Tretiak-Shields fled Ukraine and landed in a refugee camp in Germany. In 1950, she immigrated to the US with her family. Speaking no English, she was awarded a scholarship to study Russian Language and Literature at Indiana University. In 1959, Dr. Tretiak-Shields came to the University at Buffalo and opened the Department of Russian Language and Literature. She retired from UB in 1982.The aim is to foster direct contact with the host culture and immersion opportunities that help advance language acquisition as well as cross-cultural understanding.

CLaRI, the Center for Literacy and Reading Instruction, is a community resource for the assessment of children’s literacy development and individualized reading instruction, as well as a literacy research center. Children attending CLaRI for one 12-week session have shown significant growth in their reading and writing abilities (results vary depending on the child’s literacy and instructional needs).

Thorn and Rose Award Fund

Established in honor of Professor Emeritus Bertha Laury, this fund provides an award to a Master of Social Work (MSW) student who has blossomed from a “thorn” into a “rose” while attending the MSW program. The award is not necessarily presented every year, but only on rare occasions.
Dr. Stephen Dunnett Study Abroad Scholarship Fund

Established by UB's first and long-serving Vice Provost for International Education (Professor Stephen Dunnett), this fund supports UB students in any field pursuing study abroad through a UB or SUNY program. Having created the Office of Study Abroad Programs some 30 years ago, Professor Dunnett sought to increase study abroad opportunities for UB students and his fund will continue that effort. Dr. Dunnett created this endowment with the belief that experiencing other cultures through study abroad not only enhances students' personal self-growth, but also prepares them to effectively participate and compete in an increasingly multicultural and global society. Through this gift, Dr. Dunnett seeks to reduce the financial barriers to immersive study abroad experiences, thereby allowing access to this transformational experience to a wider populations of UB students. Based on available funds, a limited number of partial scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to assist students with the costs of study abroad for an academic year, semester, summer, or winter program.
