Created by longtime Architecture faculty member, Professor Bonnie Ott, who led study abroad programs to Spain for many years, this fund gives priority to Architecture and Planning students with financial need pursuing study abroad in their field for the first time. Ott Scholarship awardees participate in one of the School’s Global Studios in the summer, or on one of its exchange programs with a partner university abroad.

Nina Tretiak-Shields Fund

Created with a bequest from a retired professor of Russian at UB, this fund supports students studying a foreign language and culture abroad. Nina Tretiak-Shields was born in 1914 in Ukraine and attended Kharkiv University during the totalitarian regime of Joseph Stalin. Despite threats to her life from Stalin’s forces, she stayed at the university to complete her doctorate. In 1940, Dr. Tretiak-Shields fled Ukraine and landed in a refugee camp in Germany. In 1950, she immigrated to the US with her family. Speaking no English, she was awarded a scholarship to study Russian Language and Literature at Indiana University. In 1959, Dr. Tretiak-Shields came to the University at Buffalo and opened the Department of Russian Language and Literature. She retired from UB in 1982.The aim is to foster direct contact with the host culture and immersion opportunities that help advance language acquisition as well as cross-cultural understanding.

The fund makes it possible for doctoral students and junior faculty from the Jagiellonian to spend up to two months doing research at UB and conferring with UB colleagues, mentors and students. These visits have led to the successful completion of many Jagiellonian dissertations and book projects.

The Reichert Frost Collection features many signed and inscribed publications by Robert Frost — winner of a record four Pulitzer Prizes, and the most famous poet of his time. The collection includes a Frost manuscript, letters, photographs, audio recordings, and ephemera, as well as many Frost-related items from other critics.
Maria E. Becker Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund

Studying in France provides a wealth of benefits for students who are majoring in French. As an immersion experience, study abroad helps these students quickly gain further fluency in speaking and writing French. It allows students to experience the French culture firsthand, in a way that simply isn't possible through classwork and research at UB. And — like any study abroad experience — it helps students become global citizens.
School of Law Emergency Student Assistance Fund

The UB School of Law Emergency Student Assistance Fund was created to offer financial assistance for students facing immediate and current emergency situations. Emergencies involve circumstances beyond the student’s control such as death in the family, accident, loss of property, loss of income, health emergency or other unanticipated educational expenses.
Welch Graduate Student Award

Established by Professor Claude E. Welch, the fund provides annual financial support to a graduate student who has submitted the best written, oral or visual presentation (i.e. paper, artwork, media production, etc.) that documents original research, or makes a significant contribution to understanding political phenomena. The fund combines the Welch Student Research Fund and the Graduate Paper Award.
