Remembrance: Mapping Memory Through Bio-Interactive Media

The starting point of Remembrance is the concept of embodied memory, how emotion, loss, and healing are inscribed within the body through time. Drawing on feminist new materialism and posthuman theory (Barad 2007; Braidotti 2013; Haraway 2016), the project explores memory as a living, responsive system that can be visualized through biological signals. During the Coalesce residency, I will prototype a skin-like biomaterial interface capable of capturing and translating neural activity into visual and sonic forms, exploring its biochemical composition and responsiveness through experimental synthesis. By merging bio art, digital craft, and interactive media, Remembrance transforms scientific data into poetic, ritual like experiences that reveal the fragile continuity between body, technology, and memory. The laboratory phase at Coalesce will focus on the development of EEG embedded biotextiles and their performative interaction within immersive XR environments, integrating sensory data and material transformation into a living archive of remembrance.

Chanee Choi (Chanhee Choi) is a Korean-born artist, researcher, and educator working across digital art, performance, and biotechnology. Her work explores memory, identity, and the embodied experience of technology through XR installations, video games, and bio-interactive sculptures. She received her PhD in Digital Arts and Experimental Media from the University of Washington (2022) and currently serves as Assistant Professor of Digital Art and Animation at the University at Albany (SUNY). Choi’s ongoing series Remembrance investigates the intersection of neuroscience, craft, and feminist ritual, and has been presented internationally in exhibitions and festivals bridging art and science.
