Security Guard Training

The Security Guard Training program is designed to introduce students to emergency response procedures, crime scene prevention, legal authority of security officers, and loss prevention and proper use of force.

Qualifications to Start

Before you start this class, you must:
  • Have a High School Diploma or Equivalency
  • Meet minimum TABE Reading (543) and Math (522) scores

Career Outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Security Guards can expect a median annual wage of $30,910 or $14.86 per hour.

Security Guards are categorized as a “bright outlook” occupation which is expected to grow rapidly in the next several years, will have a large number of job openings, or are new and emerging occupations.

Places You Can Work

Upon completion of training, students will have the opportunity to interview with a security guard company. This company is hiring for a variety of positions including seasonal, part-time, and full-time opportunities. Students can schedule a mock interview with Career Services to prepare for this interview or in lieu of a professional interview. Career Services will also be offering 1:1 resume assistance to all students who complete this program.

What You Will Learn

The course provides the student with a general overview of the duties and responsibilities of a security guard. Topics covered in this course include:

  • The role of the security guard
  • Legal powers and limitations
  • Emergency situations
  • Communications and public relations
  • Access control
  • Security code of ethics and conduct
  • Fire prevention
  • Report writing

After completion of this 8-hour course, students will need to complete fingerprinting and a background check.  Those students that have completed the 8-hour training may also take our 16-hour training course.  Please contact Admissions at 716-645-1900 to see if you are eligible for this training.

After successful completion of the 8-hour course on Saturday, a certificate will be issued to the student with their security guard application.

Completion and Certifications

Upon successful completion, students earn:

  • Buffalo Educational Opportunity Center Certificate of Completion
  • NYS Security Guard Registration Card
