Translational Teamwork

Laptop.

We define teamwork to be the set of behaviors by two or more individuals as a function of coordinating requirements imposed by independent tasks in achieving common goals (such as a grant submission, a manuscript, grant review committee, or implementation of a new clinical device). Therefore, team coordination is the essence of teamwork — the process, and the moment-to-moment behaviors by which independent team members achieve important goals and share valuable resources.

We endeavour to advance translational teamwork as follows:
  • Promote a culture of multidisciplinary collaboration and teamwork
    • Acknowledge and showcase the role of teams and collaborations in scientific innovation
    • Remove challenges for hiring, retention, promotion and tenure of highly productive, collaborative, team-oriented researchers
    • Maximize opportunities for multidisciplinary collaboration and teamwork
  • Create opportunities for training and coached experiential learning for all levels of faculty, research partners, and trainees
  • Create a system and metric for assessing team effectiveness and productivity
    • Assessment of collaborative environment
    • Evaluation of team performance

Team Science and Teamwork Training Opportunities

Workshops are available to enhance a successful team science approach by providing new skills and continuous education for translational research team members.

Translational Teamwork Workshop Series

The CTSI Translational Teamwork Workshop Series provides participants with basic knowledge of teamwork principles applicable in any research, educational, or clinical context.

CTSI Virtual Library: Translational Teamwork

Sessions from the Translational Teamwork Core Competency Workshop Series, presented by experienced team researchers, were recorded and can be accessed as a series of free videos on YouTube via the CTSI Virtual Library. The series of four workshops, all lasting about one hour each, are designed to provide viewers with enhanced understanding of teamwork in research and clinical settings, strengthen teamwork skills, and improve team collaborations.
