Our History

The Center for Literacy and Reading Instruction (CLaRI) in the Department of Learning and Instruction at the University at Buffalo, known also as The Reading Center and often called Reading Clinic, was founded in 1963 by William Eller as a function of the Graduate School of Education (then the Faculty of Education Studies). William Eller acted as director until 1971. Michael Kibby served as the second director from 1971-2007. Mary McVee has served as director since that time.

The Center for Literacy and Reading Instruction is nationally known for its research and has a high local impact through professional development for educators and services for children and families.
