Diversity and Inclusion

Learning, research and community built on respect and responsibility

The Department of Anthropology at the University at Buffalo is committed to creating learning and research environments where all members of our community can participate, contribute and thrive. Anthropology is the study of humanity in all its complexity, and our classrooms, labs, field sites and offices should reflect that same respect for people, experiences and perspectives.

We work to foster spaces where students feel supported, challenged and valued, and where faculty and staff are accountable to one another and to the communities with whom we work.

Our commitment

Anthropology has a long and complex history. Parts of the field were shaped by colonialism, sexism and unequal power relationships, and some past research caused real harm, particularly to communities of color, women, and gender and sexual minorities. We take this history seriously.

As a department, we are committed to examining these legacies, learning from them, and changing our practices where needed. We support research, teaching and service that contribute positively to the communities involved and that reflect ethical, respectful and responsible engagement.

What this looks like in practice

Our commitments guide how we teach, research and work together every day.

We are committed to:

  • Creating welcoming and respectful learning and work environments in classrooms, labs, fieldwork sites and offices
  • Recruiting, supporting and retaining students, faculty and staff from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences
  • Examining power, privilege and inequality within our research, teaching and departmental practices
  • Maintaining zero tolerance for sexual misconduct in academic, research and field settings
  • Supporting scholarship that centers on historically excluded voices and perspectives
  • Encouraging a wide range of intellectual traditions and approaches in our courses
  • Ensuring inclusive representation in departmental decision making and governance

To support these commitments, the department established a Department Committee on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in 2023. This committee helps guide initiatives, assess progress and revisit this statement regularly.
