The Department of Anthropology at the University at Buffalo is committed to creating learning and research environments where all members of our community can participate, contribute and thrive. Anthropology is the study of humanity in all its complexity, and our classrooms, labs, field sites and offices should reflect that same respect for people, experiences and perspectives.
We work to foster spaces where students feel supported, challenged and valued, and where faculty and staff are accountable to one another and to the communities with whom we work.
Anthropology has a long and complex history. Parts of the field were shaped by colonialism, sexism and unequal power relationships, and some past research caused real harm, particularly to communities of color, women, and gender and sexual minorities. We take this history seriously.
As a department, we are committed to examining these legacies, learning from them, and changing our practices where needed. We support research, teaching and service that contribute positively to the communities involved and that reflect ethical, respectful and responsible engagement.
Our commitments guide how we teach, research and work together every day.
We are committed to:
To support these commitments, the department established a Department Committee on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in 2023. This committee helps guide initiatives, assess progress and revisit this statement regularly.
Students, faculty and staff have access to a wide range of university resources that support learning, well-being and community connection.
You can also explore academic support, advocacy initiatives, public programs and partnerships with local organizations through the Office of Inclusive Excellence.
We believe strong scholarship grows from respectful communities and thoughtful engagement with the world. At UB Anthropology, students learn alongside peers and faculty who care about ethical research, shared responsibility and learning from difference.
