Student-Athlete NIL Review and Approval Process

Please adhere to the following processes depending on the type of NIL engagement in which you would like to engage.

All requests are reviewed and approved electronically on a case-by-case, rolling basis as needed. Deadlines are set by category type and complexity of the proposed NIL agreement. All deadline are approximate and subject to change.

TYPE ONE

Student athlete co-branding with outside sponsors with NO UB IP assets used

Type One agreements are reviewed and approved by UB's Athletics Department. 

Please contact UB Athletics for approval. UB's Trademarks and Licensing Office does not need to review or approve this type of request.

TYPE TWO

Student athlete co-branding with just UB

Type Two agreements are reviewed and approved by the Athletics Department and University Communications. 

Please contact UB Athletics to begin the approval process, providing the following information:

  • Student Name
  • Student contact phone
  • Student contact email
  • Sport(s) played by Student-Athlete
  • Description of NIL opportunity
  • Artwork of item/screenshot(s) of media post
  • Licensed vendor to produce item
  • Name of agency that represents your NIL, if you work with one

10 business days are required for the review and approval of Type 2 NIL requests.

NOTE: Approvals may take more than the standard 10 business days if requests are complex or the submission information is incomplete.

TYPE THREE

Student athlete co-branding with a third party entity and UB

Type Three agreements are reviewed and approved by the Athletics Department, University Communications, and University Advancement. 

Please contact UB AthleticsUB's Trademarks and Licensing Office, and University Advancement's Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations for approval, providing the following information:

  • Student Name
  • Student contact phone
  • Student contact email
  • Sport(s) played by Student-Athlete
  • Description of NIL opportunity
  • Artwork of item/screenshot(s) of media post
  • Licensed vendor to produce item
  • Name of agency that represents your NIL, if you work with one
  • Company Name of third party sponsor
  • Contact information (phone and email) of third party sponsor
  • Copy of UB and third party vendor sponsorship agreement that details specifics about IP usage. If the sponsorship agreement has already been formally reviewed and approved, please provide the document reference number assigned during the review process (e.g., BS-000-123456).

15 business days are required for the review and approval of Type 3 NIL requests.

NOTE: Approvals may take more than the standard 15 business days if requests are complex or the submission information is incomplete.
