The Center for Excellence in Writing is committed to creating an accessbile space for all members of the campus community through a flexible approach to consultation practices, policies, and the scope of services offered. In addition to welcoming in and learning from our writers and our consultants, we pursue a research-based understanding of disability including a significant focus on neurodiversity. We enjoy collaborations with UB’s Office of Accessibility Resources, regularly survey our environment, policies and practice to maximize inclusion and comfort for all community members, and provide regular professional development to our staff on topics related to disability justice. We have found that our work in the area of disability justice has moved our Center forward as a resource for everyone.
Most importantly, we consider individuals as experts in their own learning processes and needs. We listen and adjust our practice to be more effective and comfortable. We encourage any member of the campus community to share experiences and to make any suggestions about how we can make our Center more inclusive, comfortable, and accessible. You can talk with your consultant, leadership in the front office, or make a note on your Navigate appointment if you would like to specify your needs or share your learning style. Also feel free to call the Center 716-645-5139 or email writing@buffalo.edu.
The CEW is located on the ground floor of Norton hall, which is connected to Capen and Knox halls. The closest parking lots are behind the Capen and Fronczak halls, requiring a valid UB parking pass. Metered spots are also available.
We have a welcome lobby with comfortable chairs and couches for writers to enjoy while they wait for their appointment, and our main consulting area is a large, open room with several tables, rolling chairs, and movable walls for privacy, with plenty of room to move around.
Our consulting space features large windows that let in natural light, in addition to adjustable fluorescent overhead lighting and lamps with light. Shaded areas with less natural light are availible for light-sensitive students.
Our consultants and writers work together in a large room, and our center is located on a busy hallway that connects Capen to Norton and Knox. Because of this, it is often difficult to mitigate unnecessary noise, though we try our best. If you are particularly sensitive to noise or easily distracted, please feel free to reach out before your appointment so that we can find a solution that works for you.
We ask visitors with service and support animals to follow guidelines regarding animals on university property.
