BUFFALO, N.Y. — The University at Buffalo is rated among the top 20 public colleges and universities in the U.S., according to Quacquarelli Symonds’ second annual list of America’s top universities.

UB is No. 20 among public institutions and ranks 50th among all U.S. universities in the QS USA University Rankings, announced this morning. UB ranks sixth out of the 42 colleges and universities ranked in New York State.

QS Quacquarelli Symonds is a global higher education research company and publisher of QS World University Rankings.

The U.S. edition evaluates universities according to 17 metrics across four broad groupings: Employability, Diversity and Internationalization, Learning Experience, and Research.

Employability, which accounts for 27% of a university’s score, looks at the employment prospects of students graduating from U.S. higher education institutions, through metrics that include the results of QS’ Employer Reputation Survey, alumni outcomes and salary post-graduation.

Diversity and Internationalization (25%) attempts to understand to what extent a higher education institution is striving toward being as inclusive as possible, while promoting an environment that seeks to achieve United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender Equality and Goal 10: Reduced Inequality.

Learning Experience (22%) aims to reflect the overall learning environment provided by a higher education institution to its students, through the level of support it offers all its students regardless of background, as demonstrated through metrics with regard to retention rate, teaching spending and graduation rates of students with and without federal financial support.

Research (26%) focuses on the quality of the research, regardless of the size of an institution, and how open and internationally collaborative its research outputs are, whether within academia or with industry. UB’s research score improved to 49, recognizing its academic reputation, citations, international research and community partnerships.
