Pre-Chiropractic

About the Profession

Chiropractic health care focuses on the restoration and enhancement of health by altering the neural regulation of body systems, primarily, but not exclusively by adjustment of the spine and other articulations of the body. Training requires three and one-half to four years at a chiropractic college. For information on the profession, please visit the Association of Chiropractic Colleges website.

Chiropractic Requirements

Prerequisite course requirements can range from none at all, to a flexible list of a certain number of natural or physical science credits of your choosing, to a more strict list of required courses. Courses recommended or required could include:

  • general chemistry
  • biology
  • organic chemistry
  • physics
  • biochemistry
  • human anatomy
  • human physiology
  • statistics
  • psychology
  • English/writing
  • other humanities or social sciences

Additionally, credit requirements can range from 90 college credits to a bachelor’s degree depending on the particular school and the regulations for state licensing. The average GPA for accepted students is around 3.0.

Due to the wide variation in requirements, we strongly recommend researching different schools so you can plan early for the classes that you will need. More information about different chiropractic colleges can be found online.

Let your major advisor know of your professional goals so they can help you, along with Prehealth, plan your courses accordingly. Come to advising appointments prepared with information about the prerequisites for your programs of interest and your advisors can assist you with identifying the correct classes to fulfill those requirements.

Applying to Chiropractic Programs

There is no central application for chiropractic so you would need to apply directly to each program you are interested in. You will need to research each school's process, timeline, and any additional requirements (shadowing hours, specific recommendation letters, etc.). Typically there is no admissions test required, but a letter of recommendation from a Doctor of Chiropractic may be.
