    It takes just seconds for tall buildings to collapse during powerful earthquakes. Knowing precisely what's happening in those seconds can help engineers design buildings that are less prone to sustaining that kind of damage. But the nature of collapse is not well understood. That's why researchers at the University at Buffalo and Japan's Kyoto University teamed up recently to try an innovative "hybrid" approach to testing that may provide a safer, far less expensive way to learn about how and why full-scale buildings collapse.

    Jean Wactawski-Wende, Ph.D., professor and associate chair of the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine in the University at Buffalo School of Public Health and Health Professions, and adjunct professor in the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics in the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, has been appointed UB's vice provost for strategic initiatives.

    Stephen Marc, a noted African-American photographer and digital montage artist, has spent nearly a decade on the road in the U.S. and Canada documenting the places and people associated with America's Underground Railroad. The network of secret routes and safe houses used by escaping enslaved African Americans is the subject of "Passage on the Underground Railroad," an exhibition of complex digital montages that will be presented in the University at Buffalo Art Gallery.
