Richard V. Lee, M.D., professor of medicine, obstetrics and pediatrics in the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, has received the C.G. Barnes Award from the International Society of Obstetric Medicine in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field.

A blood component called glycated LDL -- a form of low-density lipoprotein, the "bad" cholesterol, with a sugar molecule attached -- is known to be higher in diabetics than non-diabetics, and extensive research has shown that diabetics are at increased risk of a heart attack. Now, for the first time, a new study that followed a cohort of elderly people in southern Italy found that glycated LDL levels increase the risk of heart attack in both diabetics and persons without diabetes.

The Gifted Math Program at the University at Buffalo is accepting nominations of outstanding sixth-grade mathematics students submitted by schools and parents for its Fall 2007 entering class.

The UB Anderson Gallery is proud to present "Bruce Adams, Half Life, 1980-2006," the first comprehensive survey of more than 70 paintings and works on paper. The exhibition will open in the UB Anderson Gallery with a public reception on Feb. 9 from 6-8 p.m.

A University at Buffalo researcher has been awarded a $741,360 grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration, an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, to develop an educational intervention program to increase living liver donations in New York State.

A computerized patient simulator valued at $30,000 and designed to improve the training of medical students has been donated to the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences by Margaret W. Paroski, M.D., and her husband, Peter Martin, Sr.

"Prints from the Collection," an exhibition of work from the University at Buffalo's permanent collection, is on view in the UB Anderson Gallery's second floor gallery through Jan. 21.

With a grant from the National Science Foundation, researchers at the University at Buffalo will study the experiences of first and second emergency responders during Western New York's "October Surprise" snowstorm to determine if the functioning of emergency responders is impaired significantly when they are worried about their own safety and the safety of their families.

The 207th anniversary of the birth of Millard Fillmore, the University at Buffalo's first chancellor and 13th president of the United States, will be observed in ceremonies to be held at 10 a.m. Jan. 5 in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Metabonomics, the analytical profiling of metabolites in living systems, will be the subject of a free, day-long program to be held at the University at Buffalo on Jan. 8.
