Derek Daniels is an expert on the anatomical and biochemical basis of ingestive behaviors, including food, water, and salt intake. He is director of the Center for Ingestive Behavior Research at UB.

Daniels’ lab studies how the brain controls drinking behavior, with research testing hypotheses about the genes, proteins and neural circuits that control thirst and the appetite for salt. These are critical drives that help people maintain a proper balance of fluid in their bodies.
