Orientation Leaders (OL) serve as the face of New to UB programs, including Summer Orientation and Welcome Weekend, and must be positive representatives of UB and the student experience.
In this position, you will spend (most of) the summer helping new students prepare for their start at UB. OLs have the opportunity to make an impact on the entire incoming class and develop skills in communication, problem-solving, and more!
OLs will get paid and housed to spend June and July on campus to prepare for and then implement the on-campus orientation program: First-Year Summer Orientation and Transfer Summer Orientation.
In August, OLs return to campus a week early to prepare for and then implement Welcome Weekend and International Welcome Weekend with support from Welcome Weekend Leaders.
Description of Duties: Orientation Leaders are hired to implement signature programs as part of the New to UB process. They are the face of the on-campus New to UB programs—Summer Orientation and Welcome Weekend—and must be positive representatives of UB and the student experience.
Primary responsibilities include:
• Implementing New to UB programs and assisting with day-of event problem-solving
• Leading and facilitating meetings with groups of 15-30 new students
• Helping students navigate primarily North Campus and facilitating additional tours
• Engaging in casual conversations with guests between sessions and at meals
• Providing accurate information about UB services, resources, and experiences
• Sharing your UB student experience and expertise to guide and support new student transitions
• Assisting with training and managing Welcome Weekend Leaders
• Executing logistics for New to UB programs, including but not limited to setting up/tearing down events, moving tables/chairs, setting up pop-up tents, moving boxes or other supplies (up to 30 lbs.), and organizing giveaways
Qualifications:
• Available for all training and program dates (additional information regarding conflicts in application)
• Minimum 2.0 cumulative UB GPA, minimum 2.5 preferred
• Current undergraduate UB student who has completed at least one semester of coursework at UB at the time of application and will be enrolled as an undergraduate student at UB in Fall 2026
• In good academic and disciplinary standing (upon hiring and maintained while in the position)
• Motivated to help new students and families with diverse identities and experiences
• Maintains composure and can problem-solve in fast-paced environments
• Takes initiative in performing job responsibilities, finding solutions, and helping others
• Have a Social Security Number by June 8 (OTPP will advise on this process; you are responsible for taking timely action)
Compensation:
• Pre-tax pay rate of $17.75 per hour with maximum of 270 working hours
• Option to live in free on-campus housing during June training and July program (not required)
• Most meals provided during summer orientation programs
Time Commitment:
• Spring Training: May 1, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.
• Summer Training: June 15 – June 25
• Transfer Summer Orientation: June 26, July 15, August 19, 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
• First-Year Summer Orientation: June 29-30, July 2-3, 6-7, 9-10, 13-14, 16-17, 20-21, 23-24, 27-28, 30-31
• August Training
• International Welcome Weekend and Welcome Weekend: August 20-25 – work up to 20 hours below
