PCORI's Mission and How They Are Different From NIH

Comparative effectiveness research (CER) seeks to determine “which treatment works best, for whom, and under what circumstances.” CER compares interventions that are already known to be efficacious, i.e., work at least some of the time for some of the people. Funding for CER was a significant part of the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act, as $1.1 billion went to build infrastructure for CER. The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) was subsequently formed in 2010 as part of the Affordable Care Act to fund patient-centered CER, where patients and stakeholders have direct engagement with all aspects of the research and research focuses on outcomes that matter to patients in studies of real-world effectiveness.

Workshop 1 Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the concept of patient-centered comparative effectiveness research.
  • Identify project goals consistent with the overall mission of PCORI.
