How many people will be studied?

We expect about 200 to 250 people here will be in this research study.

What happens if I say yes, I want to be in this research?

If you agree to take part in this study, you will be asked to complete a series of short activities designed to help us understand your experience using an online learning platform developed to help older adults stay safe from scams.

  1. Pre-Survey: You will first complete a brief survey that asks about your background, familiarity with online scams, confidence in identifying scams, and level of concern about being scammed.

  2. Pre-Test  (12 multiple-choice questions): Next, you will take a short test to assess your current knowledge of different types of scams, common warning signs, and strategies for protection.

  3. Online Learning Module: After completing the pre-test, you will proceed to a self-paced online course. This course includes educational content, examples, and tips on how to recognize and avoid scams.

  4. Post-Test  (12 multiple-choice questions): Upon completing the course, you will take another short test to measure any changes or improvements in your knowledge.

  5. Follow-Up Survey: Finally, you will complete a brief follow-up survey to share your opinions about the platform, including its usefulness, ease of use, satisfaction, engagement, and your intention to apply what you learned in daily life.

  6. Follow-Up Phone Interview (for those who agree): Approximately six weeks after the individual evaluation session, a member of the research team will contact you at an agreed-upon time to conduct a short interview. The purpose of this interview is to understand how your awareness, confidence, and digital safety practices may have changed since the learning session.

Your total participation is expected to take approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. You may skip any question you do not wish to answer and may stop participating at any time without penalty or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled.

What happens if I say yes, but I change my mind later?

You can leave the research at any time it will not be held against you.
