Amanda Nickerson is a SUNY Distinguished professor of school psychology and director of the Alberti Center for Bullying Abuse Prevention at the University at Buffalo, the State University of New York. Her research focuses on understanding, preventing and intervening with school violence, with an emphasis on bullying and cyberbullying.
Nickerson has written or edited 9 books with her colleagues (including Cyberbullying: Helping children navigate digital technology and social media [2025, Wiley] and Bystander intervention in bullying and peer victimization [2026, Springer Nature/Palgrave Macmillan].
She has published more than 170 journal articles and book chapters, and delivered over 450 presentations on these topics. Her work has been funded by several national, state, and private foundations, such as the National Institutes of Health, the American Educational Research Association, the New York State Developmental Disabilities Planning Council, the Committee for Children, and the Institute of Education Sciences.
Nickerson serves on editorial boards of multiple journals and is the previous associate editor of the Journal of School Violence. She has also served on multiple safety initiatives, such as the Technical Review Panel for the National Center for Education Statistics School Survey on Crime and Safety and the Expert Panel for the National Council for Behavioral Health and the Born this Way Foundation’s Mental Health First Aid USA.
Nickerson was appointed to Governor Cuomo’s Suicide Prevention Task Force and served as and Coordinator of Research for the National Association of School Psychologists’ School Safety and Crisis Prevention Committee. She is a licensed psychologist, nationally certified school psychologist, and fellow of the American Psychological Association and American Educational Research Association.
