American Society of Civil Engineers Nathan M. Newmark Medal

The Nathan M. Newmark Medal recognizes an ASCE member for contributions that have substantially strengthened the scientific base of structural engineering. Established in 1975 by SCE’s Engineering Mechanics Institute and the Structural Engineering Institute, the Newmark Medal is given to one recipient a year.

2022-23 Honorees

Andrew S. Whittaker

Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering

A fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Structural Engineering Institute and American Concrete Institute, Andrew Whittaker, PhD, is a SUNY Distinguished Professor of of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering. An internationally renowned structural engineer, Whittaker has made fundamental contributions across a range of fields, including performance-based earthquake engineering, seismic probabilistic risk assessment and blast and impact engineering. His research and contributions are widely used to develop guidelines and codes and, as a result, have had a tremendous impact on how structures are protected from natural and man-made disasters. His work has been recognized with numerous awards and honors, including two prestigious medals in 2023: the Nathan M. Newmark Medal from the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Untermyer & Cisler Reactor Technology Medal from the American Nuclear Society.
