BS in AI and Responsible Communication

The BS in AI and Responsible Communication at UB brings together communication, artificial intelligence, and data skills so you can help people navigate a world filled with chatbots, deepfakes and algorithmic feeds. You will study how AI changes the way we share information, how messages spread across networks, and how to design communication that serves the public good.
At a flagship public research university with leading AI initiatives, you will learn in small classes, work with faculty mentors and prepare for emerging careers that need both human insight and technical understanding.
This program is built for students who are curious about media, storytelling and technology—and who want to ask big questions about truth, persuasion, and power in the age of AI. You’ll build a strong communication foundation while gaining high-level understanding of AI technologies, data and ethics. Coursework covers:
- Interpersonal, organizational, and mass communication
- AI systems and their social impacts
- Media literacy and the information environment
- Programming concepts, computational thinking, probability and data
- Research methods in communication or related social sciences
- Advanced electives tailored to your interests
- A capstone project addressing a real-world AI-communication challenge
Because this major connects technology with real people and real consequences, experiential learning is central. Students can:
- Intern with media outlets, tech companies, nonprofits or government agencies
- Join student media, communication groups or computing clubs
