UB faculty, staff and students who need to connect to Wi-Fi in areas of campus where there is no signal, such as an outdoor space, now can request UB Wi-Fi to Go.

The portable Wi-Fi unit, which brings an enterprise-level hot spot to events or areas of campus lacking a strong connection, can run for up to six hours without a power source or charge. It can accommodate up to 10 customers for standard Web browsing, according to UBIT network engineer Adam Zangerle, who created the unit.

The Wi-Fi to Go unit is mounted on a tripod and requires no configuration to use it. Easily deployable and durable, it can work in just about any environment, including a light rain, Zangerle says.

UB Wi-Fi to Go relies on access to Verizon’s 4g LTE cellular service. “If there’s a Verizon Wireless 4g LTE signal, it will connect and the performance is completely subject to cellular connectivity,” he adds.

UB Wi-Fi to Go is available on a first-come, first-served basis at no charge. A UB faculty or staff member must request use of UB Wi-Fi to Go on behalf of student organizations as an endorsement of the event or activity.

Anyone who would like to use UB WiFi to Go should fill out a form at the UBIT Help Center.
