Statement on Violence in the Middle East

Published October 10, 2023

Dear University Community,

Over the last several days, we have seen horrifying images and heard brutal accounts of the terrorist attacks that Hamas unleashed on Israel. Civilians—men, women, children of all ages—being attacked, terrorized and taken hostage. Coordinated rocket attacks killing hundreds of Israelis and counterstrikes that claimed hundreds of Palestinian lives.

We condemn the brazen attack by Hamas, and we hope for the safe release of the more-than 150 hostages. Despite the stark reality that warfare, once initiated, rarely resolves expeditiously, we continue to pray for an end to the bloodshed, and for enduring peace and stability in the region.

Although this crisis is erupting on the other side of the world, we recognize that it hits extremely close to home for many members of our UB community. For our students, the Intercultural and Diversity Center, the Office of the Dean of Students and Counseling Services are here to help. For our faculty and staff, please take advantage of the resources available at our Employee Assistance Program.

While we attempt to process these appalling acts of violence, let us continue to center our discourse with each other in compassion and respect as we come together in solidarity with those who are suffering.

Sincerely,

Satish K. Tripathi
President
