Research Agenda

Dr. Barnes is an emeritus senior research scientist at RIA. Prior to retirement, her research focused on problem gambling among adult and adolescent general populations.  Her most recent grant examined the ecological and sociocultural influences on Native American gambling and alcohol use. She also was co-principal investigator on the Survey of Gambling in the U.S., which analyzed trends in gambling behaviors and problems over a decade-long period.  Past research included the Family and Adolescent Study, a six-wave longitudinal study of family influences on the development of adolescent alcohol misuse, which reported key findings about how parenting practices, particularly inadequate support and monitoring, influence the onset of alcohol misuse and the trajectory of alcohol misuse over the course of adolescence.

Areas of Expertise

  • Gambling and co-occurring substance and alcohol use disorders
  • Trends in problem gambling in the U.S.
  • Family influences on adolescent drinking and other problem behaviors
