The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship is awarded to sophomores and juniors who have outstanding potential and intend to pursue advanced degrees in mathematics, the natural sciences or engineering.

Forty Marshall Scholarships are awarded per year to finance young Americans of high ability to study at the graduate level at a United Kingdom institution in any field of study. As future leaders, with a lasting understanding of British society, Marshall Scholars strengthen the enduring relationship between the British and American peoples, their governments and their institutions. Marshall Scholars are talented, independent and wide-ranging, and their time as Scholars enhances their intellectual and personal growth. Their direct engagement with Britain through its best academic programs contributes to their ultimate personal success.

The Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Program is a U.S. Department of State Program, administered by Howard University. The program attracts and prepares young people for careers in international service.

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Council of American Overseas Research Centers, this award offers intensive summer language institutes overseas in eleven critical need foreign languages. The CLS Program is part of the National Security Language Initiative, a U.S. government interagency effort to expand dramatically the number of Americans studying and mastering critical need foreign languages.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) realizes that the country's strong science and technology community provides a critical advantage in the development and implementation of counter-terrorist measures and other DHS objectives. The DHS Scholarship and Fellowship Program is intended for both undergraduate and graduate students interested in pursuing the basic science and technology innovations that can be applied to the DHS mission.

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the Fulbright program is the largest U.S. international exchange program offering opportunities for students, scholars and professionals to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools world-wide. The program was established in 1946 by the U.S. Congress to "enable the government of the United States to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries."

Gates Cambridge Scholarships are awarded to outstanding applicants from countries outside of the UK to purse a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge. The selection criteria include outstanding intellectual ability, leadership potential, and a commitment to improving the lives of others.

The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation, the federal memorial to our thirty-third President, awards merit-based scholarships to college students who plan to pursue careers in government or elsewhere in public service. Truman Scholars receive up to $30,000 for graduate or professional school, participate in leadership development activities, and have special opportunities for internships and employment with the federal government.

The Hertz Graduate Fellowship Award is a five year fellowship. The goal is to build a community that creates innovation to improve lives, supports the national defense, and ensures America's competitiveness in the global economy.

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Scholarship identifies and supports young people of exceptional promise, application, deportment, and character who have financial need and demonstrated excellence in academic endeavors and extracurricular activities. The scholarship provides up to six years of support, which can total as much as $50,000 per year.

The Morris K. Udall Scholarship Foundation awards eighty $5,000 scholarships annually to undergraduates who will pursue careers relating to the environment, and to Native American or Alaska Natives interested in tribal public policy and Native American health care. Through these scholarships, the Foundation hopes to encourage future leaders across a wide spectrum of policy, science, education, social science and health fields.

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowships are awarded by the Department of Defense (DoD) to applicants who will pursue a doctoral degree in, or closely related to, an area of DoD interest within one of fifteen disciplines. The DoD awards fellowships to individuals who have demonstrated the ability and special aptitude for advanced training.

The National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship provides three years of support ($40,000 per year plus tuition waiver and fees) for graduate study leading to research-based masters or doctoral degrees in mathematical, physical, biological, engineering and behavioral and social sciences, including the history of science.

The Rhodes Scholarship is the oldest and most celebrated in the world. The award enables students to study for two years at Oxford University. Each year, 32 Americans are chosen for their outstanding scholarly achievements, character, commitment to others and the common good, and for their leadership potential in whatever domain their careers may lead.

SMART The Science, Mathematics And Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program has been established by the Department of Defense (DoD) to support undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. The program aims to increase the number of civilian scientists and engineers working at DoD laboratories.

The Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship seeks to attract talented, committed individuals with backgrounds in the STEM fields—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—to teach in high-need secondary schools. The fellowship also works to change the way top teachers are prepared, partnering with colleges and universities that have agreed to provide fellows with innovative, year-long classroom experiences, rigorous academic work, and ongoing mentoring.

The Scharps Award was established in memory of attorneys Benjamin and David Scharps, and is given on the basis of an essay describing the role and relevance of law in dealing with a current legal issue. The legal topic changes annually. One award of $1,500 is presented to the SUNY student who has written the best 2,000 word essay. A second award of $1,000 is presented to the runner-up.

This special award honors SUNY students who have best demonstrated and been recognized for their integration of academic excellence with other aspects of their lives, which may include leadership, athletics, career achievement, community service or creative and performing arts.

Select UB students are invited to present their research and creative findings to elected officials of the NY State Assembly, the NY State Senate, the SUNY Board of Trustees, the Office of the Governor and the SUNY Chancellor’s Office. This state-wide symposium is hosted by the SUNY-wide Faculty Senate in Albany.

The Clifford C. Furnas Scholar-Athlete Award was established to recognize outstanding undergraduate performance in scholarship and athletic prowess, and to encourage continuation into graduate or professional education. The recipient of this award must be committed to the pursuit of subsequent graduate study in any field or discipline at any accredited college or university.

The UB Awards for Excellence in Research, Scholarship and Creativity recognize outstanding contributions from each decanal area that achieve superiority in presentation, content, and scope, and which therefore merit acknowledgement as efforts worthy of university-wide distinction. The University at Buffalo is pleased to recognize student projects that exhibit the highest characteristics of achievement among this select group. (This began as an undergraduate award category. In 2018, it was expanded so an award is presented to both an undergraduate and a graduate project from each decanal unit.)

Presented annually by the Graduate School, the UB Outstanding PhD Dissertation Award acknowledges a truly outstanding dissertation researched and written by a UB doctoral student who has received a PhD from UB within the past five years. Dissertations nominated for this award are expected to be highly distinctive with the potential to make an impactful contribution to the author’s respective field of study.

Sigma Xi is an international honor society of science and engineering. Its mission is to enhance the health of the research enterprise, foster integrity in science and engineering, and promote the public's understanding of science for the purpose of improving the human condition. Here at UB, the local chapter has sponsored the Sigma Xi Student Research Competition annually for over 20 years, providing a venue for UB's research community to share their work across the entirety of science and engineering. Three winning posters are selected; the student winners are presented with certificates.

This award recognizes clubs that take what they learn in the classroom, and apply it to assist others. The award-winning organization receives a plaque engraved with their name. The plaque and a group photo of their membership are displayed in the Student Union during the next academic year. Additionally, the group receives a $500 stipend to be used for the continuation of their service to others while utilizing their unique academic talents.

The UB Three Minute Thesis Award recognizes PhD students who have excelled in effectively explaining their research in three minutes, in language appropriate to a non-specialist audience. The Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) is an academic research communication competition developed by The University of Queensland, Australia to celebrate the exciting and innovative research conducted by PhD students.
