Football coaches preach about the importance of special teams to the outcome of a game.

UB found that out the hard way on Saturday as Miami University, on the strength of several big plays by special teams, defeated the Bulls, 31-14, in Yager Stadium before 20,108 fans in a Mid-American Conference East Division battle.

Athletes of the Week

Bill Norberg of the men's soccer team scored two goals off direct free kicks within a 50-second span to key the Bulls to a 3-2 win over 23rd-ranked Marshall. Norberg's two goals gave the Bulls a 2-1 lead after falling behind early in the first half. For the season, the senior leads the team with three goals and six points.

Michaela Kollarova of the women's tennis team won the New York State Championship at second singles at the competition in Binghamton. Kollarova, a freshman, took the title by defeating Dowling's Jackie Legnon 6-3, 6-0. She went 4-0 in the two-day tour-nament without losing a set. For the fall season, she is 6-2 in singles play.

The game turned on several special teams' plays in the second and third quarter. Trailing 14-7 late in the second quarter, UB (1-4) saw an impressive 10-play drive in the final minutes of the first half end with a 32-yard missed field goal by sophomore Dallas Pelz with just 23 seconds left in the half.

After Miami extended its lead to 17-7 on a 34-yard field goal by Jared Parseghian, The RedHawks' punt returner Eddie Tillitz wove his way 80 yards on an ensuing UB punt to put his team ahead 24-7.

That sequence set up a third quarter in which the RedHawks gained the momentum, outgaining UB 136 to -7 yards.
