POETRY PLASTIQUE, an exhibit curated by Jay Sanders and Charles Bernstein, David Gray Professor in the Department of English, that presents the work of 34 poets and artists working to move poetry off the page and into sculpture, film, painting, assemblage, photography-even skywriting-will open tomorrow and run through March 10 in the Marianne Boesky Gallery, 535 West 22nd St. in Manhattan. Featuring both collaborations between poets and artists, as well as visual work by poets and textual work by visual artists, POETRY PLASTIQUE presents some of the most significant poets and artists of the time in a context that "promises to change our understanding of poetry and its relation to visual art."

George M. Hezel, director of the Affordable Housing Clinic in the Law School, recently was honored by the Heritage Christian Home Inc. for his outstanding support of the agency and people with special needs. Honored at the agency's sixth annual dinner, Hezel was cited for his initiative and expertise in developing a plan for affordable housing for people with development disabilities using federal low-income housing tax credits.

Ernest Sternberg, associate professor and chair of the Department of Planning in the School of Architecture and Planning, has been appointed by SUNY Chancellor Robert L. King to serve on the editorial board of the State University of New York Press. His term runs to June 2004.

Second-year law students Patrick Radel and Jennifer Hall emerged as the winners in the recent Judge Charles S. Desmond Moot Court Competition. Radel, judged best oralist, teamed with Hall to win first place for legal briefs in the competition, named for the late Charles Desmond, a 1920 UB law graduate and chief justice for the New York State Court of Appeals.

Jim Holstun, associate professor of English, gave a paper entitled "Mike Sprinkler, Chemical Herbicide and the Mode of Production" at a SUNY-Stony Brook conference honoring Sprinkler. Holstun also recently gave a talk, "Kett's Rebellion, History from Below and the Hysterical Sublime," at Syracuse University.

"Janeites: Austen's Disciplines and Devotees," an edited collection by Deidre Lynch, associate professor of English, has been issued by Princeton University Press.

Patricia Townsend, research associate professor of anthropology, has been awarded a research fellowship from the Society for Applied Anthropology's Environmental Anthropology Project Fellowship Program to explore "The Role of Interfaith Councils and Religious Groups in Superfund Site Identification, Assessment and Remediation."

An article on "Five Feuds: An Analysis of Homicides in Eastern Kentucky in the Late 19th Century" by Keith Otterbein, professor of anthropology, was published in the American Anthropologist.
