Northern Illinois 3, UB 0

The women's volleyball team lost to Mid-American Conference opponents Ball State (11-15, 10-15, 7-15) and Northern Illinois (15-17, 9-15, 10-15) last week in Alumni Arena.

In Friday's match against Ball State, freshman Keri Shiels led Coach Bob Maxwell's squad with nine kills, one service ace and eight digs.

Against MAC powerhouse Northern Illinois, Shiels and Aprille Sweeting had 13 kills apiece. Shiels added 15 digs. Chassey Stubler contributed with 11 kills and 20 digs.

Soccer


Women's
Northern Illinois 2, UB 0

The women's soccer team completed its season with a 2-0 loss to the number-two seed, Northern Illinois, in the quarterfinal of the Mid-American Conference Tournament.

The seventh-seed Bulls managed only one shot on goal in the contest, and remained scoreless until the second half. Sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Adams stopped 11 shots in the loss.

Men's
UB 1, Northern Illinois 0
Akron 3, UB 2

The men's soccer team competed in an exciting week of MAC championship games, upsetting Northern Illinois, 1-0, in an overtime thriller on Nov. 6, and finally ending their season with a 3-2 loss to Akron on Nov. 8 in triple overtime.

In UB's quarterfinal win, junior All-America candidate Steve Butcher booted the game-winning goal off an assist from Brian McCallion. UB goalkeeper Jim Schoenberg had six saves to preserve the victory for the sixth-seeded squad.

McCallion and Butcher scored both goals for Coach John Astudillo's team in Sunday's semifinal loss to number-one seed Akron. Butcher's goal came during the first of three overtime periods.

Basketball


Women's
Syracuse Action 74, UB 63

The women's basketball team dropped its lone exhibition game of the season to the visiting Syracuse Action, 74-63.

Senior point guard Catherine Jacob led first-year coach Cheryl Dozier's squad with 17 points and four assists. Sophomore guard Sonia Ortega and sophomore center Tiffany Bell had seven rebounds apiece, while Bell added 10 points. Senior forward Samantha Cerny was five-of-six from the charity stripe and added 11 points in the loss.

Men's
Premier All-Stars 77, UB 76

The men's basketball team lost its first exhibition game to the Premier All-Stars, 77-76, on Nov. 5 in Alumni Arena.

Sophomore Nikolai Alexeev and Koran Goodwin led the Bull's offensive attack with 17 and 16 points.

Senior Nate Johnson grabbed 13 rebounds and contributed eight points, while sophomore Ryan Peterson added seven assists and five points.

Swimming


Women's
UB 116, Howard 22 UB 123, Canisius 11

The UB women's swimming team maintained its perfect record by defeating Howard, 116-22, and Canisius, 123-11, in the Alumni Arena Natatorium.

The Bulls were led by Lieselle Trinidad, who took first-place finishes in the 200-meter individual medley (2:18.17), 200-meter butterfly and 100-meter butterfly (59.04). She also was a member of the winning 200-meter relay-medley squad (1:51.52), along with Kristen Zimmerman, Kimberley Theetge and Inger Rooneem.

Theetge also had victories in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:08.10) and 200-meter breaststroke (2:31.60).

Andrea Skillman dominated the diving events, placing first in both the one and three-meter dives with 244.5 and 234.45 points.

Men's
UB 212, Howard 63

The men's swimming team won its first match of the season against Howard, 212-63.

John Nilles and Dan Hickey led Coach Budd Termin's squad with three first-place finishes apiece. Nilles won the 50-meter freestyle and the 100-meter freestyle, while Hickey claimed top-honors in the 100-meter backstroke (1:44.28) and 500-meter freestyle (4:53.10).

Both also were members of the victorious 400-meter freestyle relay (3:17.14).

Athletes of the Week


Junior forward Steve Butcher helped the men's soccer team advance to the semi-final round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament with his sixth game-winning goal of the season. His overtime goal gave the sixth-seeded Bulls a 1-0 upset victory over third-seed Northern Illinois. During the tournament, he set school records for goals in a season (18), points in a season (43), career goals (33) and career points (77).

In victories over Canisius (123-11) and Howard (116-22), the undefeated UB women's swimming team was led by Lieselle Trinidad, who took first-place finishes in the 200-meter individual medley (2:18.17), 200-meter butterfly and 100-meter butterfly (59.04).
