Exhibits

The Gardens of the Martin House and Graycliff

The University Archives presents a special archival exhibition on the gardens of the Darwin D. Martin House and the Graycliff estate. Featured are archival photographs and documents from the Archives' Frank Lloyd Wright-Darwin D. Martin Manuscript Collection, recent gifts from the Martin family and other donors and reproductions of recently discovered landscape plans from Cornell University.

The exhibition offers unique insight into the way the Martin family experienced the gardens, through images, writings and oral histories. Wright once stated, "Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you." This concept was apparent to Darwin D. Martin and his family, who commissioned Wright to design the Martin House (built 1903-04) and Graycliff, their summer residence (built 1926-27).

The exhibition, running until January, 1999, is on view on the Special Collections Reading Room, 420 Capen Hall, North Campus. For more information, call 645-2916.

The Urbanism of District Six

The School of Architecture and Planning is hosting an exhibit, "The Urbanism of District Six," curated by Kiran Lalloo, visiting professor of architecture, through Nov. 30 in the James Dyett Gallery, 335 Hayes Hall on the South Campus.

District Six, located in Cape Town, South Africa, was declared a White area in 1966 and the government spent millions to relocate 55,000 Africans and Indians to remote areas of the city, making the district a famous example of the ignorance of apartheid. The exhibit includes copies of original drawings from an urban study on District Six conducted by the Urban Housing Unit of the Cape Technikon project team.

Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information, call 829-3485, ext. 120.

Mark Dean Veca: El Gloominator

Mark Dean Veca's installation, El Gloominator, is described as "a great liquid blob hurtling through space and suspended against the gallery wall moments before the impact." The acrylic mural, which covers all four walls of the Lightwell Gallery, was inspired by cartoon, pop art and expressionist works. It will be on display in the Lightwell Gallery, Center for the Arts, through June, 1999.

Version City

Version City, a casual survey of Toronto art, guest-curated by John Masser, is on display in the UB Art Gallery's First and Second Floor Galleries, CFA, through Dec. 20. Artists represented include Daniel Bowden, Roger Carter, Karma Clarke-Davis, Reid Diamond, Eric Glavin, Greg Hefford, Karen Henderson, Nestor Kruger, Luis Jacob, Susan Kealey, Anda Kubis, Stacey Lancaster, Euan Macdonald, Sally McKay, Jennifer McMackon, Max Streicher, Rocco Turino.
