send this article to a friend Sayaka Abe, a graduate student in linguistics at UB, has been awarded the university's 1998-99 Judith T. Melamed Memorial Fellowship. The $2,000 award is presented annually by the English Language Institute to an outstanding international graduate student in memory of Melamed. A Fulbright scholar and UB professor from 1975 until her death in 1989, Melamed taught widely in the Far East and pioneered the teaching of English as a Second Language at UB.

Dental alumni Michael A. Meenaghan and Alan J. Gross recently were honored by the UB Dental Alumni Association during the 21st annual Greater Niagara Frontier Dental Meeting. The Honor Award was presented posthumously to Meenaghan, professor emeritus of oral diagnostic sciences, for his untiring endeavors to promote the growth, development and success of the school. Gross, clinical associate professor of restorative dentistry and director of faculty development for the dental school, received the Humanitarian Award for his commitment to dentistry and concern for others and for distinguishing himself as a leader in the community.

Randall Borst, director of disability services, has been named to the board of directors of the Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD) as director of membership and constituent relations. AHEAD is an international association of disability-service providers working in the college and university setting. Borst, a member of the organization since 1990, served as chair of the Task Force on Accessibility of AHEAD Conferences and Literature from 1995-96. He also has co-presented several sessions on issues of disability in higher education at AHEAD international conferences.
