  • University Club resumes for spring semester

The University Club, a weekly informal gathering that offers UB faculty and staff an opportunity to share ideas, foster collegiality and make new friends, will resume for the spring semester.

The club, sponsored by the Office of the Provost, Faculty Senate and Professional Staff Senate, is held from 4-6 p.m. on Wednesdays in the Tiffin Room in the Student Union, North Campus, beginning Jan. 19 and running through April 27. There will be no program on March 16 due to spring break.

Complimentary light refreshments will be served.

  • ‘RecycleManiacs’ sought

UB is among colleges and universities nationwide participating in RecycleMania, a competition designed to promote recycling and waste reduction efforts on campus.

For 10 weeks—beginning Sunday and running through April 2—participating institutions will report recycling and trash data, and be ranked to determine which school has the highest recycling rate. The ultimate goal is to raise awareness of campus recycling programs and reduce overall waste generation.

During RecycleMania 2010, 607 participating campuses collectively recycled or composted more than 84.5 million pounds of waste.

This is the third consecutive year UB has participated in RecycleMania, and the university has issued a challenge to the other SUNY institutions participating in the competition to determine the top SUNY recycler, says Erin Moscati, an environmental educator with UB Green. Binghamton University finished first in the SUNY challenge last year, with UB placing second, Moscati notes.

She urges academic and support units at UB to take part in the contest, noting a work order can be placed with Facilities Customer Service for recycling bins.

Members of UB’s Recycling Committee will be roaming the North and South campuses from noon to 2 p.m. on Wednesdays looking for recyclers. Those who are “caught green handed” will be awarded prizes ranging from reusable water bottles to RecycleMania T-shirts to gift certificates to local restaurants.

For more information, visit the RecycleMania website.

  • PSS to meet

The next general membership meeting of the Professional Staff Senate will take place from 3-5 p.m. Jan. 27 in the Center for Tomorrow, North Campus.

Guest speaker will be Scott Weber, vice provost and dean for undergraduate education.

General membership meetings are open to all members of the professional staff.

For more information, contact the PSS office at 645-2003.

  • New requirement for NSF proposals

The Office of the Vice President for Research is reminding faculty researchers of a new requirement for all proposals for funding to the National Science Foundation.

All proposals submitted or due on or after Jan. 18 must include a supplementary document describing the “Data Management Plan” that will conform to NSF policy on the dissemination and sharing of research results.

Additional information can be found on the OVPR website.

Anyone with questions about this new requirement should contact Ken Tramposch, associate vice president for research, at 645-3321.
