  • Beakers ’n Beer set for Nov. 15

The next installment of “Beakers ’n Beer,” the monthly networking event presented by the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, will take place from 5-7 p.m. Nov. 15 at Coco at Le Metro, 888 Main St.

The networking series, which has been taking place for more than a decade, is designed to bring doctors, researchers and other professionals on the BNMC out of their offices and laboratories and into a social environment where they can meet and talk with their peers.

The events are free and open to the public. Free food and drinks are provided.

Those planning to attend are asked to RSVP.

  • Assistance for ‘smokeout’ available

The Great American Smokeout is Nov. 15, and Wellness Education Services has planned some events to help members of the UB community who are ready to quit the habit.

The special events start on Nov. 13 with information tables featuring smoking-cessation information and free nicotine patches, gum and lozenges set up in the food court of the Ellicott Complex, North Campus, from noon to 2 p.m. and on the first floor of Goodyear Hall, South Campus, from 5-7 p.m.

A Great American Smokeout Quit Smoking Workshop will be held from 4-5 p.m. Nov. 14 in 250 Student Union, North Campus. Meet other faculty, staff and students who plan to quit smoking on the Great American Smokeout.

On “smokeout” day, free nicotine-replacement medications, quitting tips, games, snacks and more will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in 145 Student Union.

The American Cancer Society sponsors the Great American Smokeout every November to stop the use of tobacco and raise awareness about the dangers of smoking and the many effective ways available to quit smoking.

After the smokeout, Wellness Education Services will continue to offer support to those quitting the habit at its weekly Quit Smoking Drop-in Clinics from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays in 114 Student Union.

All services are free of charge.

  • Service learning events planned

A networking event and two workshops are being held this fall for faculty members interested in incorporating service learning into their courses.

A Service Learning Networking Event will take place from 8:30-10 a.m. Nov. 15 in 17 Norton Hall, North Campus. The breakfast event is designed to provide updates on service learning practices at UB, as well as to disseminate findings of service learning focus groups that were held last spring.

Those interested in attending should RSVP to Jessica Wangelin.

The Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) is offering two workshops for faculty who either currently offer service learning classes or would like to learn more about incorporating service learning in their courses.

The workshop about developing a service learning course will be held on Nov. 13; a session on learning outcomes and assessment in service learning will take place on Dec. 4.

Full descriptions and registration links for the workshops can be found on the TLC website.
