HR develops new employee evaluations

University Human Resources has developed a new format for performance programs and evaluations for UB professional staff who are members of United University Professions (UUP).

The new forms aim to create consistency, provide guidance to managers for setting goals and objectives, assess performance and make it easier for supervisors to complete these tasks.

Scott Nostaja, interim vice president for university human resources, noted that a recent institution-wide assessment by HR of how professional staff are evaluated found that practices are inconsistent across the university.

“In some cases, professional employees are receiving very robust and regular evaluations about their performance; in other cases, some professional staff are receiving little or no formal feedback relative to their performance,” he said, adding that assessing employees’ performances on a regular basis is an effective leadership tool that provides the employees with essential feedback and direction, assists them in their professional development and creates a forum in which supervisors can share important information about performance expectations.

Moreover, the university’s collective bargaining agreement with UUP specifically requires that all supervisors provide an annual performance evaluation for their employees.

The new forms were developed in consultation with a committee made up of representatives of diverse campus groups, as well as both UB chapters of UUP. They were piloted in the Division of Athletics and part of the Office of the Vice President for Health Sciences.
