Robert “Bob” Hoeing, associate professor in the Department of Linguistics, died unexpectedly Jan. 19. He was 67.
Hoeing had a 36-year career at UB. He began as a faculty member in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, and later moved to the Department of Linguistics
He had served as director of undergraduate studies since 2008 and director of undergraduate studies for the German program since 1995. He also served as chair of several faculty search committees, and was chair of the Faculty Senate from 2007-11. He also was the senate’s secretary from 1996-98 and from 2006-07. He also chaired the senate’s elections committee.
As a professor of linguistics and German language, his courses served as an introduction to world languages for many students. For others, he deepened students’ interest in the German language he loved to speak, research and teach.
Hoeing published numerous articles and a book, in addition to giving lectures and conference presentations. He also served as co-organizer of the Germanic Linguistics Annual Conference during the two times that it was held in Buffalo. He received his PhD and master’s degrees from Indiana University and his bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri.
Hoeing was a beloved professor and mentor to his students, and a kind and generous colleague. He made many contributions to the department, the college and the UB community. He will be missed by all who knew him and worked alongside him.
