This year’s Welcome Weekend will feature some of the usual back-to-school favorites, like the human interlocking UB and the Welcome Back Blast, but with a new leader ushering students into a new academic year.
UB President Caroline Attardo Genco, PhD, who began her tenure as the university’s 16th president on Aug. 10, will address the incoming class during a convocation added to the weekend lineup this year. Attendance is limited to only new students.
The convocation is part of a jam-packed weekend that will include numerous opportunities for new students to meet their classmates and get acquainted with life and learning at UB prior to the start of another hectic semester.
UB anticipates more than 5,000 first-year students with a projected total enrollment of some 30,000 for the new academic year.
“Opening week and our full schedule of events at UB make this one of the most exciting times of the year,” says Brian Hamluk, vice president for student life. “It’s a chance for students to discover new opportunities, build meaningful connections and find their place within the UB community.”
Some highlights of the week ahead:
Wednesday: Welcome Weekend begins for international students as they get oriented with UB’s campuses, its services and opportunities for involvement.
Thursday: It’s move-in day for all new students. The annual Festival of Culture Uniting Students (FOCUS) begins with a parade starting at 8 p.m. at Hayes Hall on the South Campus and ends with a celebration of international food and music.
Friday: The convocation and class photo of the interlocking UB takes place in the evening at Broadview Stadium on the North Campus. That will be followed by activities at First Night Fun, which includes a pop-up skating rink, a silent disco and a movie under the stars.
Saturday: Students in search of their niche on campus are encouraged to attend Campus Fest, where more than 300 student organizations will be represented.
In the evening, the entire UB community is invited to the annual Bulls Welcome Back Blast, the biggest pep rally of the year.
“One of the highlights during opening continues to be the Bulls Welcome Back Blast, which provides the perfect way to kick off the year, celebrating the people, traditions and spirit that makes UB such a special place,” Hamluk says.
The free event at Broadview Stadium includes a sneak peek at the university’s athletic teams and live performances by UB’s marching band, illusionist Leon Etienne, indie rock band Letter to Elise, Wild West star Loop Rawlins and the neon and LED dance group Light Balance.
Fireworks will follow. Gates open at 7:30 p.m.
Events like the Welcome Back Blast are more than just cheering on UB teams and celebrating the start of the new year, says Phyllis Floro, director of student engagement.
“They're about creating a sense of belonging from the very beginning of the academic year,” Floro says. “When students come together to celebrate UB traditions, meet their fellow Bulls and share memorable experiences, they're building connections that strengthen our campus community.”
The day concludes with Victor’s Glow Zone Dance Party at the Student Union field on the North Campus.
Sunday: Student-run groups will host activities and events for prospective members, while the Career Design Center will provide information on campus employers.
Monday: Classes begin.
