Dafnis Prieto, Sí o Sí Quartet to perform at UB

Published March 11, 2026

Internationally acclaimed drummer, composer and MacArthur Fellow Dafnis Prieto and his dynamic Sí o Sí Quartet will perform at UB at 7:30 p.m. March 28 in Lippes Concert Hall in Slee Hall, North Campus.

Led by Prieto, the Cuban-American drummer known for his explosive rhythmic language and genre-defying compositions, the Sí o Sí Quartet blends Afro-Cuban traditions with modern jazz innovation in a high-energy program full of rhythmic complexity and musical daring. The ensemble features Martin Bejerano (piano), Peter Apfelbaum (woodwinds), Ricky Rodríguez (electric bass) and Prieto (drums and percussion).

The program will highlight music from the quartet’s acclaimed album “3 Sides of the Coin” and other recent works.

Tickets are $20. Advance tickets can be purchased at Ticketmaster, at the Center for the Arts box office from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, and at the Slee Hall box office an hour before the concert. UB students are entitled to one complimentary ticket — to this and all UB music department concerts — and may pick up their ticket right before the concert.

During his visit to UB, Prieto will engage with students and the wider community at a free composer workshop at 3 p.m. March 27 in Lippes Concert Hall. The session will offer composers an opportunity to hear Prieto discuss his creative process, rhythmic concepts and compositional approach, while providing insight into writing for contemporary jazz ensembles.

Prieto’s work has earned international recognition for its fearless originality and virtuosic precision. The New York Times describes his music as “a marvel of acrobatic musicianship.” As a performer and composer, Prieto continues to redefine the possibilities of rhythm in contemporary music, bridging jazz, classical and Afro-Caribbean traditions.
