Faculty to fight for survival at Life Raft Debate

Published February 6, 2024

When disaster threatens all of humanity, which professor will make the cut to join the survivors?

Five UB faculty members from different disciplines will argue that he or she is worthy of the coveted final spot in the imaginary life raft set to sail to a new society at the 13th annual Life Raft Debate on Feb. 13.

The debate, sponsored by the UB Honors College, will take place from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in 215 Natural Sciences Complex, North Campus.

After each faculty member has made his or her case, members of the audience will decide the winner.

This year’s contestants:

  • Diana Aga, SUNY Distinguished Professor and Henry M. Woodburn Chair, Department of Chemistry.
  • Paschalis Alexandridis, UB Distinguished Professor, Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering.
  • Jason Corwin, clinical assistant professor, Department of Indigenous Studies.
  • Christina King, clinical assistant professor, Department of Learning and Instruction.
  • Elizabeth Mietlicki-Baase, assistant professor, Department of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences.

Last year's champion, Martha Bohm, associate professor of achitecture, is away this semester in Scotland. So Kory Smith, professor and chair of the Department of Architecture, will step in and play the role of devil’s advocate.
