New York Philharmonic concertmaster Frank Huang and esteemed pianist Gilles Vonsattel will perform Nov. 15 at UB as part of the Department of Music’s Slee Visiting Artist Series.
The concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Lippes Concert Hall in Slee Hall, North Campus. The program features Beethoven’s Violin Sonata No. 3 in E-flat Major, Op. 12, No. 3; Prokofiev’s Violin Sonata No. 1 in F minor, Op. 80; and Beethoven’s Violin Sonata No. 9 in A Major, Op. 47 (“Kreutzer”)
The following day, the musicians will conduct simultaneous master classes, open to the public, at 10 a.m.; Gilles’ class will be in Lippes Concert Hall and Huang’s class will be in Baird Recital Hall, 250 Baird Hall, North Campus.
Huang has served as concertmaster, or lead violinist, of the New York Philharmonic since 2015. His distinguished career began when he started studying the violin at age 7; by 11, he had appeared with the Houston Symphony in a nationally broadcast concert.
He has also appeared on NPR’s “Performance Today,” ABC’s “Good Morning America” and CNN’s “American Morning” with Paula Zahn, and played with numerous orchestras, including the Cleveland Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. Huang currently teaches at the Juilliard School of Music, which is also his alma mater.
Vonsattel, also an alumnus of Julliard, teaches at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. The accomplished pianist and recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant is well known for his immensely diverse repertoire. He has performed with the Warsaw Philharmonic and in the U.S. with the Utah, Santa Fe and Nashville symphonies, the Boston Pops Orchestra, and numerous others.
