Violinist and UB faculty member Shannon Reilly will perform a program featuring the world premiere of Anna Heflin’s “The Wonderland Series” at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 3 in Baird Recital Hall, 250 Baird Hall, North Campus.
“The Wonderland Series” is a 35-minute work the Brooklyn-based Heflin composed for Reilly. Pre-recorded video and audio accompany Reilly’s live performance of violin playing, singing and acting, creating three layers to the work: music inspired by Lewis Carroll’s writings; quotes from Charles Dodgson and his pseudonym, Lewis Carroll; and scholarly research about Dodgson and his works.
Themes throughout “The Wonderland Series” include government and law; Dodgson’s obsession with the number 42 and its relevance to Christianity and the Jabberwocky, the Carroll/Dodgson split identity; and how Darwin’s work influenced “Alice in Wonderland.”
In addition to teaching at UB, Reilly is the string teacher at Nardin Academy and at Buffalo String Works, where she works primarily with beginner violin students. She is a substitute violinist for the Buffalo Philharmonic and has performed with such groups as Ensemble Signal, Broadband, Nu Deco, Eastman’s OSSIA, Alla Balena and the JACK Quartet.
Heflin has an impressive resume not just as a composer, but as a performer as well. As a freelance violist, she has performed at venues including the Metropolitan Opera, Carnegie Hall, the Museum of Natural History and more.
