High school and college students from across the nation will get a glimpse of the pharmacy profession this week at the fourth annual University at Buffalo Pharmacy Summer Institute for High School and College Students.

The institute, hosted by the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, will provide nearly 50 students with a broad scope of learning experiences, including a variety of hands-on activities, visits to local clinical practices and research labs, and lectures by UB faculty and Buffalo-area alumni on topics ranging from vaccinations to the future of the profession.

The program will be held July 8-10 in the Pharmacy Building on the South Campus. Activities will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“We are elated to bring talented high school and college students with an interest in health care to the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences to interactively explore the many exciting opportunities available to pharmacists in our state-of-the-art facilities,” says Jennifer Rosenberg, associate dean of admissions and advisement.

Participants will experience an in-depth educational program showcasing the ins and outs of pharmacy practice through innovative sessions, such as patient counseling, compounding of medications, interprofessional education and other clinically focused health care activities.

To further prepare students for health care careers, the institute will highlight educational opportunities at the pharmacy school, and will offer recommendations on preparatory high school courses focusing on undergraduate pharmacy coursework.
