The National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (National NSSLHA) has awarded the NSSLHA chapter at UB Gold Chapter Honors for 2019.

National NSSLHA chapter honors are awarded to affiliated NSSLHA chapters that demonstrate an outstanding effort to support National NSSLHA’s mission to inspire, empower and support students in communication sciences and disorders programs.

UB’s NSSLHA chapter was recognized for helping National NSSLHA:

  • Increase awareness of communication sciences and disorders (CSD) on more than 100 local college campuses and communities across the country.
  • Increase advocacy efforts by sending more than 10,000 letters to state and federal legislators.
  • Provide scholarships to students in CSD programs by contributing to a donation of more than $18,000 to the ASHFoundation’s NSSLHA Scholarship.

This year, UB’s NSSLHA chapter sought to make the Department of Communicative Disorders and Sciences more inclusive by bringing undergraduate and graduate students together in a number of joint philanthropy, advocacy and educational events. Among the activities were taking part in the Step Up for Down Syndrome and Moving Day for the Parkinson’s Foundation fundraising walks, and writing advocacy letters to legislators on such topics as Medicare coverage, school-based funding, and reauthorization of the Higher Education Act.
